Our last drive to Snowshoe was interesting. The weather provided this thick mysterious mist (fog?) that sort of crept in like an unwanted visitor. It sat on top of the land and held in the smells and blocked out the light. As we moved farther into the mountains, the mist took on a more dramatic quality. It reminded me of the opening scene from an old (apparently Disney) movie I watched on HBO as a kid in the 80s. Something Wicked This Way Comes was adapted from a book by Ray Bradbury. I had to read that book as a summer assignment for my 10th grade English teacher. Mrs. Edwards was a single woman who was born in my hometown but left and attended one of the Ivy League sister schools. She was wicked smart, well read and educated. She returned as an older single woman and lived in an old antebellum home that had belonged to her family with, no joke, a dozen cats. How classic is that? She was a true gem and being a teenager, I couldn’t appreciate it. How lucky am I to have had her teach that book? How it comes back to me now on a drive in the mountains.
I digress…
The reason I meant to post this photo was to reiterate that careful driving is important in the mountains. The weather changes abruptly.
