We recently learned that it is important to remove and wash helmet padding. Our daughter had a bad struggle with helmet acne and dermatitis after a couple of stints working as a camp counselor and junior instructor and a couple weeks of riding this summer.
My husband wiped down the outside of the helmet and removed the front pads (the ones cushioning the jaws) and soaked them in a gentle water-vinegar-detergent mixture, carefully pressed the pads (no twisting) and set them out to dry in the sun.
We did not remove the padded mesh lining the skull part of the helmet.
We also made a visit to her physician for prescription strength treatment of her skin.
This will be a new routine going forward.
